Well-being has a number of elements: freedom from hunger, disease, indignity and discrimination are four, as Amartya Sen states in his Idea of Justice (2009). They can be observed and they can be measured. Methods and approaches vary depending on purpose. The fact that whilst economies have grown substantially over the past 3 decades, well-being has not improved is showing the need to deepen the general understanding. Ethics, corporate social responsibility and environmental sustainability must be the common ground when looking for creative approaches to give a helping hand to those in need.

Why neuroscience and education are relevant.

Research has shown that education is one of the most, if not the most, significant and valuable way of improving life for people. It allows children and adults to opportunities otherwise closed. Education is the key to confront the challenges of the 21st.century. US Secretary Arne Duncan stated on August 20, 2009 “…our children will be competing with kids from around the world for the jobs of the future. And it is no secret that our only path to long-term economic security and higher productivity is to dramatically improve both the depth and breadth of education in this country…” Today, the intersection of biology and cognitive science with pedagogy is showing new paths for the future. Leaders will need expertise and increase their understanding of various perspectives to contribute to solve educational problems around the globe. Broadly speaking, neuroscience researches about the process by which the brain learns and remembers. One of the major goals is to deepen the understanding of the ways the around 100 billion neurons connect between each other. Patterns of neural activity correspond to mental representations and learning is about changes in connectivity by pruning, strenghtening connections or by potentiating synapses. So, the brain goes to school: it changes connectivity.

People learn and learning is fundamental to human beings. By specializing we become fully human. Largely, it takes place in our brain, the primary organ for learning. By bringing together brain and cognitive science with education, huge leapfrogs have been made in the past decade.

Education has proved to be one of the most significant and valuable ways of improving people´s lives. Schooling and training not only promote learning but also stimulate economic growth, achieve better health of infants and mothers, reduce birth rates and population growth.

Brain science is a young field and new tools for assessing learning and on learning styles are coming into practice. Brain-based educators favor a constructivist, active learning model.

The next years will see a closely linked working relationship between educators and brain scientists, giving us valuable insights into how people learn and how we should teach them. GPSinnovation is actively working in this direction.

Leveraging the new streams of talent around the world, and tapping into the widest possible talent pool … Demographic shifts have created a new imperative and present organizations, schools, administrations with new opportunities. Today a range of Fortune 500 companies – Johnson & Johnson, Aon, Citi and American Express, GE just to name a few – have chief diversity officers, in charge of managing diversity and promoting inclusion on a broad level.

On the other side, diversity is closely linked to innovation. The EU Innovation & Diversity survey findings show that diversity in workforce can break the vicious cycle of unilateral thinking and spark creativity and empower innovation processes. Thinking alike no matter how smart will most likely bring the same solutions over and over. New and better solutions require different thinking. Research showed that an increasing number of companies recognize this. Whole-brain thinking is a proven way of dealing with diversity.

At summer end 2009, global recession might show first signs of recovery – with luck. GDP might stop shrinking in Asian economies, maybe in Europe and in the US. Still, the foundations of possible growth are not very clear. Governments around the globe have stepped in by offering stimulus packages, often of enormous dimensions. So now is the time for the action list. It will differ from country to country, from region to region, even from company to company. But voices become loud asking for a change of mindset. Attacking urgent microeconomic reforms, more fluency in global coordination and emphazising poverty and inclusion issues are amongst the requested issues. The hardest part will be the change of mindset, shifting present paradigms. Creativity and innovation will need to be strongly fostered on all levels: schoolchildren, youth, entrepreneurs, administration, enterprise, education. It is the time to take advantage of structural changes imposed by the crisis. Yet, R&D is usually cut back because companies usually finance through cash flow, which, in these times, means a strong decline. SME companies are even harder hit if you consider that their main primary asset – their idea or patent – is intangible and herewith hard to finance in these times. So, even more, this is the time to rely on knowledge, on new knowledge. Governments will have to take into consideration that we need a more open and more international kind of innovation, with creativity flowing freely. Reinforcement of nationalistic trade and migration are working against this. We need to design sustainable long-term growth and we need creativity.

Why communicating is good for companies.

ICT have impacted our daily lives, our ways to work and how we communicate. It is easier than ever to stay ahead, stay in touch and share. Yet, there are still many organizations that struggle. The truth is that part of success in managing change lies in the leader´s ability to choose right communication channels that match the context. Leadership has communication as a cornerstone. Messages will try to decrease resistance and encourage positive change attitudes. A lot has to do with creating understanding. Voice, actions, body language, tone send messages across the organization. To find out if the leader has created this comprehension, the best way is to listen and encourage feedback. Communicating is a primary tool.
